Comedy especially the stand up is widely regarded as the most difficult gig in the show business and the successful product innovation is so much difficult, it could be regarded as the standup comedy of the business world. Innovation such as comedy is a very messy, often a counter intuitive business and it is an iterative loop of creation, feedback, revision, rejection and creation again.

  • Know the audience and then ignore their advice: The customer is rarely right when it comes to an innovation and they are rarely right about what they want next. Businesses run on the process and the traditional market research process of the concept testing is indeed an efficient process.
  • Data does not replace insight: Do not just collect the data about the audience but study them also and data does not tell the comedians what to do but the insight does and the insight is the responsibility of the innovator not the audience.
  • Keep it fresh: Comedians ca not rely on the same routine for very long and no matter how successful it is and the same can be said for the successful brands.
  • Develop your own point of view: Late night television talk show hosts all have the same daily news to work with yet they each put their own spin on it.
